Harbor Day School, a K-8 school in Corona del Mar, California, with 408 students, an annual budget of approximately $10 million and an endowment of approximately $20 million seeks its first Director of Finance.
The Director of Finance will report to the Head of School and sit on the 8-person administrative team. Currently the school has a business manager who has handled the school’s finances for over 15 years. She plans to retire in June 2019. The business manager and one other business office staffer will report to the Director of Finance until the retirement of the business manager.
Develop, manage, and direct the operating budget. Report to the Head of School, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees on the results of the current budget and projections for future operations.
Establish a financial modeling system for strategic planning to aid the administration and Board of Trustees in making strategic decisions.
Provide financial information and planning that builds trust among all constituencies, including potential donors.
Organize and facilitate the Board of Trustees finance and audit committee meetings, support the compensation committee as necessary, attend Board of Trustee meetings.
Oversee annual reporting to accrediting and member bodies (CAIS, NAIS, WASC).
Support the Trustees and all efforts of the Harbor Day Endowment Corporation.
Manage and direct all functions of the business office, including but not limited to payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, accounting, and food service.
Maintain compliance with all government regulations.
Safeguard the school’s assets through establishing and maintaining strong and appropriate internal controls and procedures.
Oversee risk management through the purchase of appropriate insurance policies, including property, casualty, liability, D & O, workers compensation, cyber security, and others as agreed upon by the Board of Trustees. Maintain a good relationship with the appropriate insurance brokers.
Oversee the human resource functions and implementation of benefits and compensation, employee relations, and employee safety.
Serve on the committee (consisting of Trustees and the Head of School) that oversees the school’s 403b and other retirement plans. Act as the point person in the school’s relationship with the plan consultant and administrator.
Manage the financial aid process.
Work closely with the Director of Facilities in supporting the maintenance of school properties.
Select or approve and directly oversee relationships with business service providers, including auditors, banks, attorneys, insurance brokers and providers, investment managers, food service providers, contractors, and consultants.
Oversee the food service program.
Effectively supervise and mentor key staff.
Serve as a visible community leader working with parents, teachers, school leadership, and Trustees to implement the mission and vision of the school.
Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or CPA preferred.
7+ years of financial and business leadership; independent school experience preferred.
Experienced strategic thinker who can take Harbor Day School into the future.
Demonstrated experience in financial planning, modeling, and analysis, including cost drivers, competitive analysis, market analysis, etc.
Experience developing long-range capital and operational budget planning.
Solid experience and proficiency in working with a variety of databases.
Ability to lead strategic initiatives to completion while anticipating issues and identifying effective solutions across the school.
Relevant computer proficiency, including database and spreadsheet experience.
Experience in human resource management, employee benefits and payroll procedures.
Demonstrated experience in measuring and improving organization-wide productivity.
Effective collaboration skills, consistent meaningful contribution to senior leadership teams, and a sense of humor and ability to exhibit patience in a group.
Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills, including the ability to distill complex topics and then communicate them effectively to constituents with varied levels of financial knowledge and sophistication.
