The Department of Physics at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin Fall 2018. The candidate should have a background in experimental physics, engineering, or closely related field. The successful candidate will participate in the department’s Robotics Program (a collaborative program with the Computer Science Department), and be committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. It will be expected that the person appointed to this role will demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.
Responsibilities Include: Teaching undergraduate courses with a focus on the newly designed Robotics curriculum. This curriculum is hands-on and project-oriented, combining key elements of Physics, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering. To support this, we are looking for someone interested in potentially teaching courses such as Electronics, Optics, Introduction to Robotics, Advanced Digital Design, Fundamentals of Engineering Design, and Technical Writing. From time to time the successful candidate might need to teach courses in Introductory Physics (both major and non-major levels) as well as the laboratory sections associated with them. The successful candidate will be expected to be active in teaching, scholarship, and department and campus-wide service. Candidates may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.
Required Qualifications: A PhD in Physics or Engineering or related fields is required for appointment as an Assistant Professor. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, upon proof that the applicant’s defense of her/his dissertation will be scheduled within the first year of appointment. A successful ABD applicant will receive promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor and a salary increment at the start of the semester following verification of the terminal degree completion. An ABD hire will be limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (2 years maximum). Successful candidate will have demonstrated an ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference given to candidates with demonstrated interest in working with undergraduate students on research projects and evidence of teaching excellence.
