The Global Education Office (GEO) at the State University of New York (SUNY), College at Plattsburgh is seeking dynamic candidates for the position of Study Abroad Advisor. GEO supports SUNY Plattsburgh’s strategic goal to “Increase Global Experiences and Multicultural Competencies” by encouraging participation in study abroad opportunities and enrolling international students from a wide variety of countries and cultures. This full-time, ten-month position will be integral to meeting the office’s study abroad participation goals.
Responsibilities Include: Advise study-away program participants with program selection, the application and acceptance processes, course selection, obtaining visas, securing appropriate housing, pre-departure preparation, maintaining health and safety while away, and re-entry issues. This includes responding to in-person, phone, mail, and e-mail communication. Assist in the creation and accuracy of applicant/participant files and study abroad records. Assist office with crisis response, program budgeting, data collection, and other duties as assigned by supervisor. Assist in the admission and orientation of inbound exchange students. Work with international partners in admissions and post-program procedures. Assist with international and National Student Exchange program recruitment. Examples include making presentations both on and off campus, tabling, and collaborating on study away promotion and awareness strategies. Recruit potential study abroad participants and assist with events such as the study abroad fair, information sessions, orientation and re-entry programming. Draft and edit promotional and advising materials. Examples include flyers, presentations, web content, social media, etc. Supervise a team of study abroad alumni who serve as mentors to new study abroad participants and recruits. Periodic regional travel within the United States and evening/weekend work is required.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; past participation in study abroad and/or living/working abroad; experience with production of publicity including pamphlets, brochures and websites; evidence of strong communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to handle multiple tasks and be self-guided. The willingness and ability to perform periodic regional travel within the United States and evening/weekend work also is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree, experience advising or working with diverse populations, preferably in a university setting, experience working in higher education and/or working with international programs, and experience and knowledge of SUNY study abroad.
