The Department of Sport and Wellness at the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh seeks qualified applicants for a tenure track assistant professor, beginning August, 2018. Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising in a dynamic and growing major.
The Department of Sport and Wellness offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Fitness and Wellness Leadership (FWL), as well as minors in Athletic Coaching and Personal Trainer. The Department supports approximately 160 students in the three academic programs, with approximately 90 in the FWL degree, in addition to offering physical education classes for students from the general student body.
The undergraduate Fitness & Wellness Leadership degree is an interdisciplinary program, providing content knowledge, hands-on personal training experience, study in business and management, and clinical rotations. Students graduating are prepared for careers working at medically-based fitness facilities, sports performance sites, community wellness programs, personal training studios, physical therapy clinics, medically-based fitness facilities, corporate fitness centers, YMCA’s/JCC’s, and private and commercial health clubs. The degree also prepares students to enter graduate school programs in exercise science, athletic training, and physical therapy. The graduate Fitness and Wellness Leadership degree is a fully online program which provides expertise in exercise science and training, knowledge of business management techniques, internships, and preparation to work in a variety of settings — private, public, or medical.
The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. They will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.
Responsibilities Include: Supporting the curriculum by teaching in areas that may include exercise physiology, kinesiology, exercise program design, health assessments, and injury prevention; advising and oversight of personnel and student concerns; oversight of clinical rotations and internship sites and experiences. Candidates may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format. Engage in activities such as curriculum redesign, development, and academic advising.
Required Qualifications: Terminal Degree in a relevant field (e.g., exercise physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, exercise science, health and fitness) with demonstrated university teaching experience. The successful candidate will have shown an ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators.
Preferred Qualifications: Training and teaching experience in the areas of program design for special populations (e.g., aging, youth athletics, physiological diseases), familiarity with group exercise programming for varied populations and health & wellness education; industry standard awards and/or certifications (ACSM/NSCA); and a record of publications and/or presentations at relevant conferences.
