The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Senior Program Manager, High Reliability, for the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET) located in our Chicago office.
Founded in 1944, the Health Research & Educational Trust is the not-for-profit research and education affiliate of the American Hospital Association (AHA). HRET’s mission is to transform health care through research and education. HRET’s applied research seeks to create new knowledge, tools and assistance in improving the delivery of health care by providers and practitioners within the communities they serve.
The Senior Program Manager, High Reliability is responsible for providing operational leadership of one or more research, improvement or organizational initiatives. This position will oversee project implementation which includes developing and coaching on quality improvement topics, safety, and culture change, managing relationships with partners and contractors, and general project management. Work experience in a health care environment with clinical decision making, and leading quality or safety initiatives, is required. Develops and implements operational project plans, supervises project staff, and oversees the work in order to execute and achieve the projects' strategic, financial, and compliance goals. The senior program manager will lead and oversee communications with external sponsors, project partners, and hospital or health system leaders, and work with their peers and other project leaders to effectively plan and manage project resources, develop staff, and serve as a role model. This position will also work on projects across other HRET practice areas that includes population health, patient-family engagement, and delivery system innovation.
Develops, updates, and implements project workplan for assigned projects. Contributes to high-level, strategic program planning as appropriate to define program objectives and determine program delivery model that assures successful outcomes.
Provides day-to-day oversight of all aspects of the project. Provides and ensures effective communication with all stakeholders, including status reporting, risk management, issue resolution, and among all stakeholders. Coordinates with other AHA components, subcontractors and consultants, and other participating organizations.
In most cases, senior program managers will support the creation and updating of annual project budgets and will share responsibility for overseeing budgets, reviewing monthly financials and labor reports, and ensuring that the project's spending is aligned with available resources.
Leads the creation of drafts of project deliverables and ensures that all required processes are followed to obtain needed feedback, ensure quality assurance, and that deliverables are completed on time and are fully compliant with all specified requirements.
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Nursing, Public Health, Public Policy, Business.
5-7 years experience with a minimum 5 years of work experience related to health care quality/safety, population health, community health and/or policy.
Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Minimum 3 years of experience managing and developing multiple, concurrent projects and deadlines.
Experience working with and within the health care delivery system, non-profit, government or academic/research settings with a health care focus is strongly preferred.
Master’s degree in Clinical Studies (e.g. nursing, social work, etc.) Public Health, Public Policy or Business is preferred. Graduate education in health-related sciences may be substituted for years of experience.
Knowledge Requirements: Very strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and execute workplans, communicate effectively with external partners, coordinate the work of experts and consultants, and develop and manage to budgets is essential. Knowledge of clinical care and its improvement is required. Knowledge of healthcare organization and/or healthcare associations/society operations is required. Knowledge of effective design and facilitation of meeting discussions. Candidate should have experience in quality improvement initiatives, possess the ability to interpret data collected to assess project impact, have strong written and oral communication skills, and work effectively in teams and independently. Clinical experience such as nursing, social work or pharmacy is a preferred, but not required. Experience working on externally-funded projects or complex, multifaceted projects is preferred.
Technical Requirements: Intermediate computer and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook) skills are required. Proficiency with content management software (e.g. Sharepoint) is preferred. Ability to learn new technology is required.
