The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Student Union. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position.

The Division: The Division of Student Life is comprised of over 400 staff that serve our students through 19 departments and functions. Staff are actively engaged in the lives of our students, living and learning with them in our residence halls, student union, and other campus environments. The Division seeks candidates willing to engage, challenge, and support our students through intentional programs and services. In addition, we seek colleagues that are committed to teamwork and have a palpable passion for working with and serving all students.
The Position: Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, the Director will be responsible for the administrative vision, leadership, and management of the new Student Union opening in January 2019. The first few months of this position will entail the transition and occupation of Phase II of the Student Union. During the transition, the Director shall serve as a key liaison to the construction contractor, architects, interior designers, Facilities Services, and other service providers.
Upon full occupation of the Student Union, the Director will supervise full and part-time staff and approximately 100 student employees. The 402,000-square-foot Student Union has an operational budget of more than 1.3 million, expects to host more than 12,000 meetings and events per year and operates the auxiliary spaces of the Central Ticket Office, Grand Central Station Recreation Space, and the U.S.P.S. Contract Post Office.
The Student Union is a comprehensive department that provides an array of facilities and services in support of the University's mission. The Director guides the establishment of the department's strategic plan; directs the establishment, implementation, and enforcement of department priorities, policies, and practices; develops guidelines governing acceptable use of space, hours of operation, rental rates, building access, and security; evaluates and ensures departmental effectiveness and efficiency through on-going assessment efforts; ensures all Union programs and services reflect diversity and inclusion for the campus community; develops departmental revenue and expenditure budgets; and administers all aspects of human resource management (hiring, supervision, evaluation, and professional development). The Director is expected to establish and maintain good working relationships and collaborations with Union-housed offices and departments, internal and external constituencies, and campus/divisional partners to achieve the mission of the Union; provide leadership for university/division committees and initiatives, and represent the University at appropriate state, regional, and national professional organizations.
