Michael Baker International’s Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and safety experts. As new technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideas are required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects.
Michael Baker International is seeking an experienced Construction Manager/Project Manager with construction management experience on large airport terminal projects. In addition to immediately engaging in the technical oversight of our active aviation projects, the successful candidate will be responsible to bring the existing backlog of projects on line and lead market research and pursuits. We expect this individual to be recognized in the industry as a subject matter expert in airport construction including pre-construction, bid and award, construction, and commissioning phase activities.
Maintain ultimate responsibility for delivery of project quality and safety:
Develop, maintain, distribute, and update project-specific Project Management Plan, including Health and Safety Plans and Quality Management Plans
Conduct safety meetings and training programs to ensure safety requirements are met
Coordinate audits of quality management processes and procedures
Sustain continuous improvement for all processes
Review project proposal and scope of work to determine schedule, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing projects, assisting in contract negotiations, as required
Establish work plan for large complex aviation projects, arrange for staffing for each phase of the project, including subconsultant engagement
Coordinate project activities with Owner and Program Manager and other agencies such as the FAA, DEP, the local Conservation District, and local townships
Direct and coordinate activities of project personnel to ensure progress remains on schedule and within prescribed budget
Review status reports prepared by project personnel and modify schedules or plans, as required
Prepare project reports for management, client, or others
Provide status updates, reports, etc. as needed for internal use
Communicate externally with client and project stakeholders; develop communications standards, processes, and expectations for project team
Communicate internally with Michael Baker management regarding project details, progress, etc.
Confer with project personnel to provide technical advice and resolve problems
Generate and/or approve contractor pay applications and change order requests; review certified payrolls and DBE reports
Conduct regular job progress meetings; program management and CM/Design coordination meetings; and technical meetings
Oversee coordination of staging, and shutdown/start-up operations to ensure uninterrupted maintenance of facility operations
Talent Identification, Acquisition, and Development
This senior level Construction Manager/Project Manager will work with the Pittsburgh Office Construction Services Practice Executive, Pittsburgh Office Aviation Practice Lead, Construction Services National Practice Lead, and Aviation National Practice Lead to help identify, acquire, and develop experts and emerging talent in core practice areas. The successful candidate will identify talent by leveraging and expanding existing networks and acquire talent by participating in interviews, meeting with prospective talent, and helping promote Michael Baker’s brand.
Actively identify and recruit industry talent as needed for strategic pursuits and projects
Share technical expertise to develop the skillsets of Michael Baker employees within the Construction Services and Aviation practices
The Construction Manager/Project Manager will provide superior client engagement to existing Michael Baker International key clients. The individual must be able to build rapport and establish positive relationships with existing and prospective Michael Baker clients. They will also leverage existing relationships to help create new opportunities.
Build positive working relationships with existing and prospective clients
Work to understand each key client’s unique existing and potential challenges and opportunities through positive working relationships with clients
Ensure client satisfaction on key projects and existing Michael Baker services
Engage in regular interaction with existing and prospective clients to conduct progress reports on overall performance of key projects; help to repair client relationships when client satisfaction challenges emerge
Adhere to and execute Michael Baker’s established processes for Client Engagement
The Construction Manager/Project Manager is responsible for supporting strategic pursuits in the construction services and aviation markets, establishing Michael Baker International as a technical leader/expert in the industry and key markets, and actively seek to identify how Michael Baker can expand our construction services market share.
Identify, provide technical oversight, and lead key strategic pursuits; provide thought leadership and technical expertise
Promote Michael Baker to see services and provide key differentiators to prospective clients and teaming partners
Seek to understand technological advances and changing political (e.g., federal, state, local laws and regulations) landscapes that could impact Michael Baker’s ability to pursue and deliver work to existing and new markets/industries; identify opportunities for Michael Baker to expand and/or deliver new or additional services
Understand Michael Baker competitor services and offerings; actively seek to build Michael Baker’s technical services to be comparable with and/or superior to competitor’s consulting service offerings
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in mentoring and growing staff including assistant resident engineers, estimators, schedulers, project controls staff, office engineers, and inspectors. The Construction Manager/Project Manager should have strong leadership skills, past training/coaching experience, and strong industry client and teaming partnership contacts and established relationships.
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and/or related field of study
15+ years of experience managing construction of aviation projects, including airport terminals is a must.
PA Professional Engineer (PE) or PA Registered Architect (RA) required, or ability to obtain within 6 months
Proven Construction Management experience in the aviation market
Working knowledge of FAA regulations and SOPs
Experience executing construction management contracts at medium-hub and/or large-hub airports
Comprehensive understanding of aviation, and vertical engineering and construction including: airline support functions, baggage operations, security/screening facilities and checkpoints, building utilities, commercial and concessions areas, airport offices and conference space, parking garages, paving operations, roadway, infrastructure, and demolition
Experience in delivering large projects (values at >$500M construction contracts and signature airport facilities)
Demonstrated proficiency in project safety, scheduling (CPM scheduling, Primavera, Microsoft Project), staffing, cost estimating, risk management, quality management, and project/document controls
Ability to manage various levels and numbers of staff, including development of project staffing plan and proven approach to staff onboarding
Aptitude for communicating with owner/client staff, contractors, and subconsultants
Commitment to and confirmed track record of safely delivering projects on time, under budget, and of the utmost quality
Dedication to project goals, client satisfaction, corporate aspirations, business development, growth objectives, staff development, and operational excellence
Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), Certified Construction Manager (CCM) is preferred
PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP) is favorable
