The Financial Aid Advisor is responsible for counseling students on federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs, evaluating student financial aid applications, awarding financial aid to eligible students, verifying student enrollment and satisfactory academic progress, and adjusting student budgets and awards accordingly. In addition, this position ensures all actions are documented in the student file in accordance with policy, using appropriate software packages. The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Student Services (70%)
Respond to oral and written inquiries from students, parents, faculty and staff about the financial aid process.
Counsel students on federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs, regulations, procedures for applying for financial aid and satisfactory academic progress requirements.
Collect documentation/information necessary to resolve conflicting information.
Evaluate student applications for federal, state, and institutional financial aid.
Perform the various complex technical duties required to determine financial need and award aid in accordance with federal and state law and institutional policy.
Perform verification in compliance with statutory requirements.
Ensure financial aid is awarded to eligible students, at the correct amounts, and by regulatory and institutional deadlines. Verify student enrollment and adjust student budgets and awards accordingly.
Provide counseling to students regarding their financial concerns relative to their personal and/or academic problems and goals.
Advise students on consequences of academic withdrawals and lack of satisfactory academic progress on Title IV funds for current and future semesters.
Work closely with Student Accounts, Registration and Admissions to resolve cross-departmental student issues.
Financial Aid Administration (20%):
Manage a file review caseload.
Keep abreast of constantly changing Title IV regulations, state and institutional policies and procedures.
Review all cyclical reports and appeals to make appropriate changes, adjustments and/or corrections to students' data.
Represent Carey’s Financial Aid Office and Johns Hopkins University by providing student outreach services at the invitation of internal and external agencies and recruitment events.
Participate in other office initiatives as assigned.
Maintain membership and participate in DE-DC-MD ASFAA (Tri-State).
Attend professional development workshops and local conferences/trainings to maintain knowledge of existing and new financial aid policies, practices and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
At least one year of working experience in a financial aid office. Additional graduate education may substitute for experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula. JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Federal Title IV student financial aid rules and regulations for student eligibility, which includes needs analysis, verification, resolution of database match flags, identification and resolution of conflicting information, and awarding aid.
Ability to evaluate applications for financial aid and make difficult decisions in a timely manner; to advise applicants regarding financial aid matters; to interpret and apply regulations.
Knowledge of student financial aid programs; of modern office procedures and practices as applied to the operations of the financial aid office.
Excellent organizational skills as well as demonstrated success in providing friendly, high quality customer service and effective outreach abilities.
Must have excellent communication and writing skills in order to communicate complex information in response to inquiries and skill in using desktop and laptop computers.
Ability to conduct community outreach presentations.
3-5 years of Title IV compliance experience strongly preferred.
Familiarity with PowerFAIDS financial aid software preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must exhibit knowledge of programs, legal implications, and administration and external contacts as follows:
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work independently, and exercise independent professional judgment.
Ability to maintain knowledge of all applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to: the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, including all Title IV aid programs rules and regulations; the Tax Reform Act of 1987 and the Taxpayers’ Relief Act of 1997; Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), esp. the applicability of the Buckley Amendment to financial aid information; USCIS and DHS regulations governing citizenship, immigrant, and asylum status; Selective Service and IRS regulations and their implications for various types of financial aid.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of Federal Student Aid Administration, including application procedures, Cost of Attendance provisions, fund sources, restrictions and limitations in award amounts and exercise of professional judgment.
Knowledge of MD State Student Assistance scholarships and programs.
Experience with student financial aid data management systems and the federal software (FAA Access, EDconnect, COD, NSLDS, MDCAPS etc.), and knowledge of financial aid reporting requirements.
General knowledge of all School Enrollment Management and Student Affairs programs and policies including, but not limited to, application and admissions policies, transcript procedures, course enrollment and registration, and enrollment philosophy.
General knowledge of laws and regulations governing standard accounting methods and practices surrounding money management and financial record keeping.
Detail oriented in all aspects of position from reviewing student files and awarding financial aid, to reviewing reports.
Able to provide an expert level of service in processing financial aid requests.
Effective and efficient office administration and personnel management skills.
