Education Next: A Journal of Opinion and Research (EdNext), is a quarterly journal focused on K-12 education reform and located at Harvard's Kennedy School in the Program for Education Policy and Governance (PEPG). The Managing Editor is responsible for keeping EdNext moving forward. Prior to the print publication of each issue, articles are released on the journal's website www.educationnext.org, where additional content including web-only articles, interactive graphics, podcasts, and videos. This position reports to the editor-in-chief of EdNext.
Coordinates and oversees the efforts of the journal's assistant managing editor, two manuscript editors, and design director, and collaborates with that team on the editing and design of each issue.Produces an annual production schedule for editorial and production and supports editor-in-chief, executive editors, and other members of the editorial, web, and production teams in staying on schedule. Assigns articles to manuscript editors and collaborates with them on tracking editorial feedback to be addressed in editing; addressing points of contention arising with manuscripts or proofs; identifying titles, subtitles, and callouts for articles; facilitating author communications as needed.Arranges, sets the agenda for, and produces notes from a quarterly team art meeting.Collaborates with design director on shaping artwork and photographs for each article, using art meeting notes.Manages development of figures for each article.Examines printer's proofs of each full issue.Manages editorial calendar sketching out the issues in the upcoming year.Prepares agenda for monthly conference calls that convene the executive editorial board to discuss forthcoming issues. Prepares notes from monthly conference calls and distributes.Monitors editors' email listserve, where editorial decisions are made in between conference calls; maintains the next monthly call agenda as a living document, updating as needed based on email exchanges. Uses agendas and notes as a road map to facilitate work of executive editorial team, ensuring commissioned work is delivered on schedule and upcoming issues take shape according to the editors' vision. Drafts concept papers and proposals to the foundations providing financial support to EdNext; tracks and reports on progress with performance metrics internally as well as in the interim and final reports.Supervises assistant managing editor, communications consultant, and web editor.Assigns and reviews work, providing edits to products as needed. Conducts check-ins to discuss progress with assignments and plan for upcoming projects; conducts annual performance reviews.Keeps contracts with consultants current and manages the process of replacing employees and contractors.Duties and Responsibilities continued in Additional Information.

Writes job descriptions.Recruits for available positions or contracts through networking and posting the opportunity widely. Screens applications and conducts first-round phone interviews with applicants.Arranges team interviews for strong candidates.Conducts reference checks.Manages negotiations on offers.Conducts onboarding of new team members.Manages the production of interactive graphics for the website.Collects and prepares data.Serves as point of contact for graphic designer.Collaborates with authors, editors, and designer on the development of each interactive graphic, circulating drafts of interactive graphics to authors and editors, collating corrections, requesting changes from designer, and reviewing updated drafts to ensure corrections have been incorporated.Organizes special events. Writes invitations to speakers and panelists and drafts agenda.Collaborates with communications consultant on promoting events.Works with PEPG associate director on various logistics.With support from assistant managing editor, serves as point of contact for printer, mail house, publisher, and distribution center.Collaborates with PEPG associate director to keep abreast of financial status of the journal.

Bachelor's degree required
5+ years publications management experience in the education sector.
Advanced degree in a relevant field preferred. Experience working with a publication or media outlet and/or in education policy strongly preferred. Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Excellent writing skills with a deep knowledge of, and interest in, school reform Excellent oral communication skills. Expertise in Word and Excel required, and experience with Photoshop, InDesign, and Meltwater a plus; willingness to learn new programs essential.
