The Department of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position effective August 2019. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. They will also be expected to demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.
Responsibilities Include: Teaching courses in the successful candidate’s area of expertise, preferably Substance Abuse and the Criminal Justice System or Mental Health and the Criminal Justice System, and courses in the program core, including “Criminology” and the advanced writing and research seminar (in rotation with other members of the department). The successful candidate will be expected to sponsor individual student internships as needed, as well as offer periodic on-line courses. Position duties also include campus and department service, and student advising.
An active research agenda will be expected with a strong promise of scholarly publications, and a commitment to teaching and service, as well as the ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators. The successful candidate may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.
Required Qualifications: A doctorate degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law and Society, Sociology, Political Science, or a closely related field is required for appointment as Assistant Professor; candidates holding the Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree will be considered, provided the candidate also holds a graduate degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology or another closely related field. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, upon proof that the applicant’s defense of his/her dissertation will be scheduled within the first year of appointment. A successful ABD applicant will receive promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor and a salary increment at the start of the semester following verification of the terminal degree completion. An ABD hire will be limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (2 years maximum). The successful candidate will have teaching experience and an academic record in the area of criminology and/or criminal justice.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the areas of substance abuse or mental health and the criminal justice system. The ability to teach methods is also considered a plus.
