A sterilization engineering professional who is accountable for design and execution of programs within Sterilization Technology. The function uses scientific and engineering knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to design and execute scientifically defensible programs that allow for production of commercially sterile products at Abbott Nutrition facalities.
Accountable for the design of the thermal process given product BOM’s, microbiological characteristics, and thermal response characteristics.
Accountable for the establishment of the appropriate critical factors associated with the product, container, and processing system.
Responsible for design,execution and reporting on protocols for conducting heat penetration, temperature and heat distribution testing on research and production level sterilization systems. This can be for domestic, international, or TPM installations.
Accountable for reduction and analysis of data from heat penetration, temperature and heat distribution fieldwork.
Calculate and properly document thermal process recommendations based upon standard Formula and General method procedures.
Assist in troubleshooting thermal processing equipment & utility support system during startup and production.
Plans and executes medium to large-size assigned projects within Sterilization Technology function requiring conventional types of plans, investigations, and/or equipment.
Participates in economic analysis and feasibility studies related to project alternatives. Jointly responsible for achieving the project's financial targets in support of business objectives.
Designs, develops and executes validation protocols.
Technical / Design
Must have plant and division level experience with rotary batch and continuous sterilization systems.
Experience with partial submersion water processes and steam-air sterilization process preferred.
Anticipates future directions. Benchmarks internally and externally. Recognizes changes in the environment and present resources as indicators of future problems and opportunities; prepares for such eventualities,
Independently investigates, conducts tests or experiments, gathers data, and performs preliminary analysis. Reports findings. Prepares and communicates recommendations and respective action plans.
The position is to be considered as a Subject Matter Expert, (SME) for batch rotary sterilization systems.

Additional Responsibilities May Include:
Coordinates with technical support personnel to conduct prototype or experimental runs of products or processes.
Directs the efforts of others such as technicians and outside resources.
Provides training on systems.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science, Food Science, Industrial Microbiology or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence.
7-10 years of significant engineering and/or operational experience. Additional post-graduate education preferred.
Has demonstrated competency within a discipline.
Possesses a working technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.

Has a technical background in health care, nutritional products, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical, or similar industries (preferred).
Works under general supervision who reviews results for overall accuracy, completeness, and soundness of technical judgment.
Identifies and quantifies technical risks and their consequences relative to the success of part of a project; recommends appropriate action, e.g. reports calculations and recommendations in terms concrete enough for management to make an informed decision
