The Surface Protection Specialist provides Environmental Engineering support to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Energy Service Center (BIA-IESC). This position prepares, processes, reviews, environments assessments and impact statements to ensure agency compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Applies appropriate software and hardware to support projects and emerging technology solutions.
Uses techniques, theory precepts and practices in the environment protection specialist field and related sciences and disciplines.
Processes and reviews environmental assessments (EAs) and environmental impact statements (EISs) and recommends appropriate alternative actions to environmental issues.
Analyzes, reviews, prepares and processes environmental documents and monitors compliance required under the National
Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Reviews tribal ordinances and regulations to ensure compliance.
Serves as technical specialist and liaison between Indian tribes, agencies and commercial contractors on complex project issues, processes or methods.
Uses recognized reference standards, regulatory requirements, and pertinent statutes sufficient to assure environmental compliance and provides routine technical assistance to operating personnel and managers
Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.
Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.
Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.
JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
Ability to evaluate and perform analyses on complex environmental issues
Skill in using standard data gathering and analysis techniques to collect and review technical information on environmental activities or quality and to identify and solve problems of a procedural or factual nature
Knowledge of the policies, organization, operations, work practices, and environmental parameters of regulated industries, agricultural or commercial establishments, Federal agencies, States, or other entities sufficient to obtain information, evaluate compliance, and recommend necessary changes, control measures, best management practices, etc.
Ability to fully utilize available tools and resources to resolve issues
Effective verbal and written communication skills with solid reporting skills
Ability to clearly and concisely communicate technical information to a broad range of people with varying levels of expertise
Excellent customer service skills with ability to use tact in handling difficult individuals and/or situations
Detail-oriented with proven analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities as well as to meet specified deadlines
Ability to effectively work both individually and in a team environment
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelors and a minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education / experience. Practical experience and understanding of one or more environmental sciences or related fields (e.g., biology, ecology, chemistry, hydrology, radiation physics, environmental law, real property functions, or statistics) sufficient to assess and correlate environmental data, verify results, and discuss technical aspects of work with scientists, engineers, and other environmental experts.
