The Accountant is responsible for analyzing financial information and preparing financial statements of FreeState Electric Cooperative ("Cooperative") in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the Internal Revenue Service, other regulatory and advisory organizations, and in accordance with financial management techniques and practices appropriate within the industry. This position is responsible for monthly and annual reporting to the Accounting Manager.
Executes general ledger entries, bank reconciliations, recurring journal entries and miscellaneous receivables management. Reviews entries for accuracy and compliance with the Cooperative’s established accounting principles.
Reconciles general ledger accounts on a monthly basis.
Creates invoices for the government and contractors and enters them into the Wide Area Work Flow (WAWF) government system.
Establishes and maintains financial systems to safeguard Cooperative assets through effective internal controls, annual budgeting, timely financial reporting and annual audits.
Processes 1099’s for vendors and board members annually.
Prepares and analyzes monthly and year-end comparative financial statements; prepares and provides analysis of current results to prior periods and/or budgets.
Assists in preparing annual property tax returns.
Prepares monthly sales tax and franchise tax returns and unclaimed property reports.
Maintains contractor certificate of liability insurance and hold-harmless agreements.
Provides financial data to other management personnel for preparation of reports, work plans and budgets.
Assists in the development and implementation of long-range plans, financial forecasts, annual audits, budgets, and construction work plans.
Assists in the preparation of loan applications and work plan data requests.
Provides assistance forother management personnel as requested.
Maintains knowledge and complies with the operation of the Cooperative, the rural electric program, as well as the Cooperative’s policies and objectives.
Processes the closing/completion of work orders into summaries for submission to RUS.
Prepares documents to request loan draws for work plan loans.
Responsible for annual work order clean-up.
Prepares Cash Disbursement and Cash Activity board reports.
Receives, prepares, and codes accounts payable invoices.
Enters ACH payments into the bank website and iVue.
Fills out credit applications for vendors on behalf of the Cooperative.
Reconciles member insufficient checks, arrearages and deposits on a monthly basis.
Updates loan project data for budget purposes on a monthly basis.
Maintains Material module and Transportation module in iVue.
Records and maintains daily cash activity for excess or shortfall of cash flows.
Maintains general plant inventory records and takes physical inventories of general plant items as required or directed to assure accurate reporting of the Cooperative’s financial condition.
Calculates and posts monthly depreciation.
Assists with annual audit and budget as needed. Assists in the preparation of FEMA submittals and reports, as necessary.
Manages and completes special projects as assigned.
Performs additional duties as assigned by Management.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited university is required.
Minimum of three (3) years work-related experience in an accounting or finance capacity is required.
Experience in fiscal management and the ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures is required.
Experience with NISC software is preferred.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Prior banking knowledge is preferred.
Knowledge of RUS Uniform System of Accounts is preferred.
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles including financial reporting, cost accounting, budgeting and auditing is required.
Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
Advanced knowledge in computerized information systems used in financial and/or accounting applications.
Ability to effectively communicate, present information and respond to questions, both verbal and written.
Ability to analyze data or information by identifying the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information and using logic to address work-related issues and problems.
Ability to organize, multi-task, plan and set priorities with minimal supervision.
