Position Description:
Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities and grounds. FMD consists of five critical and interdependent support departments, including Facilities Customer & Business Services; Energy, Utilities, & Sustainability; Environmental Health & Safety; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; Facility Operations; and Special Projects. The Facilities Operations Department is responsible for providing maintenance, repair and minor construction of university facilities with employees working in such areas as mechanical and architectural building maintenance, landscape, custodial, transportation, warehouse, refuse and recycling, and surplus.
The Custodial Manager has assigned management and full supervisory responsibilities for the daily coordination and delivery of custodial operational services. Responsibilities include custodial, housekeeping, conference, contract, and assigned project supervision within the campus core and for providing a safe and sanitary work environment for all campus personnel by providing leadership and work direction to employees assigned to specific buildings under the Lead Custodian's care. The Custodial Manager establishes and schedules the daily critical path for custodial services, support services, and after-hour emergency services. May be required to schedule and coordinate department resources in support of campus events.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to four years of direct supervisory/management experience in custodial, operations, hospitality environment with experience managing a large, diverse staff, working in a multilayered organization. Demonstrated strong leadership skills and excellent customer service skills, methods and practices, and personnel management. (A 4-year degree in business administration or a related field may be substituted for two years of direct supervisory/management experience in custodial or housekeeping operation.) Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment fingerprint & background check.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of (or ability to obtain by date of hire) a valid Class C California Driver's License.
Required Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of custodial operations and all related aspects of facilities management.
Comprehensive knowledge of effective personnel management practices and supervisory skills, including motivation, training, professional development, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline.
Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate in an effective and dependable manner, as well as establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
Experience working with contractors, vendors and building professionals.
Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position and follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of safety in the work place and ability to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
Excellent time-management, planning, and organizational skills and ability to multi-task, while attending to detail, and meet the demands of multiple deadlines. Ability to adapt to organizational, procedural, policy, and technological changes.
Proficiency in the use of computers and software programs for correspondence, spreadsheets, word processing and work tracking. Effectively operate computer terminals and use related database software, electronic calendaring and email.
Maintain high quality/standards of work, leadership, ethics, commitment, and professional responsibility and judgment. Ability to represent the university and its interests in a professional and conscientious manner.
Ability to work independently with little instruction, take initiative, and utilize creative problem solving.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred custodial management experience in a large institutional operations setting.
A degree in business administration or a related field.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work various shifts, including weekends, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. Must be able to receive off hours phone calls regarding campus problems needing immediate attention and coordinate responses as needed.
Occasional long hours and unusual shifts.
Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
Ability to utilize a dust mop and floor machines and to climb a ladder.
Ability to stoop, bend, walk, and kneel on a regular basis.
Ability to safely move up to 50 pounds on a routine basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

This position classification has been defined as 'Exempt' and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date.
