Position Summary. The Deputy General Counsel reports to the General Counsel and supports her in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the OGC as the second-in-command. The Deputy GC will provide legal advice to all clients of the OGC, oversee the assignment of matters, mentor and backstop the University Attorneys and conduct long-range planning about which legal services the OGC should provide and how. The Deputy GC will be responsible for Office priorities, including cultivating relationships with key stakeholders, selecting and managing outside counsel, and establishing and enforcing OGC policies. The Deputy GC will serve as a trusted partner to the General Counsel and will be the face of the office to constituents inside and outside of Harvard. The Deputy GC will attend the Administrative Deans Council meetings and other meetings as required.

Key Responsibilities Assist the General Counsel in providing comprehensive legal counsel, representation, and oversight on the wide range of legal matters affecting Harvard University without losing sight of the organization's non-profit educational mission.
Provide advice to its academic and business leaders on legal and regulatory matters, including transactional matters, dispute resolution, internal investigations and policy formulation.
Provide advice about compliance with laws regulations and rules enforced by U.S. federal, state and local regulators, and appropriate global regulators; develop good relationships with relevant regulators and law enforcement agencies.
Protect Harvard as an institution in part by identifying legal matters that present substantial institutional risk, or risk of impairment of Harvard's reputation, or which threaten Harvard's tax-exempt status or financial condition, and elevate these concerns for appropriate resolution.
Be expert in two or more of the following practice areas: non-profit corporate governance, research-related regulation and compliance (FCA, research misconduct, use of humans or animals in research, grant administration), intellectual property law, free speech issues, criminal law, labor and employment, student affairs including FERPA, general transactional work, research and cooperative agreements, technology licensing, cultural property law, litigation and insurance.
Assist in leading, coordinating, and managing the legal services provided to Harvard; support the General Counsel in developing and mentoring the legal team and selecting and supervising outside legal counsel.
Harvard University's Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is responsible for all the legal work arising from the activities of Harvard University. The educational components of the university include an undergraduate college and graduate and professional schools in the fields of law, medicine, government, public health, business and education, to name a few, as well as museums, publishers, performance art venues and an arboretum. Its business components include police, transportation services, technology transfer and a large ambulatory health care practice. Harvard has an increasingly large and varied range of international activities, as well as robust distance learning initiatives, and is in the midst of executing a major expansion of it campus. It is a federal contractor and grant recipient and its faculty conduct research in cutting edge-areas of science and engineering. The OGC's mission is to render timely and thoughtful advice on the broad range of legal, regulatory, and policy issues that these activities generate, often conducted with intense media interest. The OGC is organized on the model of a small law firm. Each University Attorney in the office is both a generalist capable of handling a wide variety of legal matters and a specialist with particular expertise in certain key areas. Most areas of practice are staffed by more than one attorney so that the OGC can respond promptly to client needs.

The Deputy GC must be an experienced attorney with the requisite legal background and interpersonal skills to function successfully in a visible position.
Minimum 15 years of relevant legal experience.
A member in good standing of a state bar and prepared to become licensed to practice in Massachusetts, if not already, within two years of hire.
Experience as a trusted adviser.
Outstanding academic credentials.
Outstanding communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain collegial and productive working relationships across the University, including the predisposition to listen to and learn from colleagues and clients.
Experience assessing legal risk.
Ability to identify, lead, and mentor outstanding and diverse talent.
Experience with or exposure to legal issues relating to higher education, strongly preferred.
Experience managing outside litigation counsel.
Experience managing a legal team and office budget.
