Salary Range: Salary commensurate with background and experience of the individual selected. The 3200-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch is a Cal Poly educational facility and working ranch operated as a learning living laboratory. The ranch is owned by Cal Poly Corporation and managed by the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. Four permanent staff are assigned to the ranch that include the Director, the Ranch Operations Manager, and the Livestock Manager. Cal Poly Corporation Staff also includes an Administrative and Communications Coordinator, Facilities and Equipment Specialist, Livestock and Rangeland Management Specialist, Agricultural Management Specialist, Education Research Coordinator, 1 to 4 Holistic Resource Management Apprentices, and intermittent employees. All work collectively to integrate educational opportunities in the form of internships, enterprise projects, field trips, senior projects, graduate work and short courses into Ranch operations and research. This position requires on-site residence to effectively manage and support Ranch operations and programs due to the extensive variability of after-hours and weekend demands.
Independently, under general supervision of the Director: This position is responsible for a full range of management support over general ranch operations including oversight, personnel, hiring, development, implementation and coordination of all Ranch operations and programs.
This position is responsible for preparing and managing project budgets for all ranch operations and requires direct interactions and negotiations with federal, state, and county agencies to obtain permits, regulate ranch operations and the submission of required annual reports.
This position requires direct interactions and negotiations with stakeholders, neighbors, contractors and the surrounding community regarding ranch operations.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university, preferably in an area that supports key responsibilities.
Three years experience in ranch operations management, watershed management, or environmental management.
Three years experience managing budgets.
Successful track record of leadership experience in an administrative capacity which includes a minimum three years supervisory experience.
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
Possession of valid driver's license or ability to obtain by date of hire
Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
Demonstrated experience record keeping, including knowledge of principles and practices of budgeting and reporting. Demonstrated skill in operational analysis.
Ability to apply a significantly high level of initiative, judgment, and discretion in performing job duties with limited supervision.
Ability to gather information from a wide variety of resources, analyze information, and summarize and present information in a useful, understandable manner.
Demonstrated ability to manage projects related to infrastructure and facilities in sensitive environments requiring coordination, collaboration with resource and regulatory agencies.
Must be a team player and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to effectively supervise others and to receive supervision, including delegation of work assignments and problem resolution.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.

Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Master's degree from an accredited university, preferably in an area that supports key responsibilities
Experience using databases, MS Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
First aid and CPR certification
Possession of a valid Class A license
Experience in watershed management and protection measures

Must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to perform work involving, but not limited to, lifting, carrying, and maneuvering heavy objects, up to 75lbs; squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
Must be able to work safely in an indoor and outdoor environment in all types of weather conditions. This includes ability to walk and stand for long periods of time on uneven surfaces, and ability to climb steep surfaces.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
This position is a 'designated position' in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
This position classification has been defined as 'Exempt' and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
