Covering 975 square miles, Pitkin County is located in the heart of the White River National Forest, surrounded by the spectacular peaks of the central Rocky Mountains. Pitkin County includes the communities of Aspen, Snowmass, Woody Creek, Old Snowmass, Meredith, Thomasville, Redstone and portions of the town of Basalt.
The Solid Waste Center/Landfill is a small municipal solid waste facility regulated by the state of Colorado. The economy of Pitkin County is powered by tourism. As such, we see our business change along with the seasons. Construction waste constitutes a majority of our business during the summer months, and we have established multiple programs for recycling and repurposing of household hazardous waste, metal, tires, electronics, mattresses and textiles. Our Compost programming has also been growing, in our efforts to divert as much as possible from the Landfill.
