Grant and Contract Specialist

The Cornell University Public Health Program seeks an experienced grant and contract specialist to support the sponsored activity of public health faculty and other faculty engaging with similar sponsors in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The grant and contract specialist will work collaboratively to identify and develop new funding proposals and manage existing awards. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated professional with strong analytical, writing, project management, and interpersonal skills who wishes to make an impact in public health through program support.

The grant and contract specialist will develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of supported faculty's research and engaged activities. This position will be the lead project manager in the preparation of proposals and will liaise with the college research office for submission. Preparation often includes developing a budget, ensuring application requirements are met, preparing required administrative documents, and proofreading text; submission of no-cost extensions and supplemental funding requests. Post-award support includes monitoring and implementing changes for effort distribution, establishing sub-contracts, monitoring cost share accounts and ensuring compliance with sponsor and university policies. This position will provide monthly financial reports to PIs, and track and report on annual funding success rates and institutional impact.

In partnership with colleagues, this position will develop a thorough understanding of and propose internal processes for contracts with community-based partners, receiving funds from partners, hiring independent contractors, payments/incentives for study participants, navigating overhead cost reduction for small service contracts.

This position will also partner with other departmental faculty and administrators to support grant and contract activities across the college.

Experience with at least some of the following funders is preferred: USDA, NIH, NSF, CDC, HRSA, foundations, and internal Cornell funding mechanisms like Engaged Cornell and the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability. Sponsored funds received by our public health faculty support basic research and discovery, field work, extension service and evaluation, community based participatory research, and engaged service, and more.

As a member of the Public Health Program team and College of Veterinary Medicine community, you will be a champion for the College's and Program's mission in advancing professional public health basic and applied research.

Required Qualification:

• Associates degree in related field with at least two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience with sponsored funds including researching, writing, management, and reporting
• Proactive, and solution-oriented partner for faculty and program team
• Superior project management and time management skills to ensure planning and prioritization around deadlines for multiple proposals at the same time.
• Ability to work independently and have the ability to partner with and influence colleagues
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to use appropriate discretion and judgment when dealing with confidential personnel and financial information
• Demonstrated proficiency with software applications necessary to perform the job, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and the ability and willingness to learn Cornell systems

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field
• At least six years of experience providing similar support
• Experience with Cornell OSP, graduate education, budgeting, and accounting practices
• Experience preparing proposals for government and foundation grants
• Coursework in public health
