Position Summary:
Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, and/or equivalent education and experience in speech writing.
5-8 years of relevant experience.
Experience as an executive speechwriter at a senior level with a portfolio demonstrating proven success writing for CEO level and other senior executives preferably within a complex higher education or health institution.
Dynamic self-starter, highly motivated, comfortable in taking initiative and able to work with minimum supervision.
Must bring creativity and experience to communications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must possess a proficiency in communicating effectively with diverse audience in conversations and through documents.
Writing must be clear and concise with correct spelling and grammar.
Strong research skills including fact checking, information gathering.
Ability to synthesize large amounts of data and information into compelling, high level messages about the university.
Superior listening skills and ability to ask the right questions.
Highly organized, flexible, adaptable, dependable, quick on feet, and discreet.
Advanced computer skills and MS office applications.
Demonstrated proficiency in using electronica research tools and techniques.
Ability to use PowerPoint, graphics, art, photography, and design techniques.
Skill requiring judgment to take initiative, accurately establish priorities, complete complex assignments in a timely manner, and adapt quickly to changing needs and in dealing with people who present conflicting challenges.
Sensitivity to the culture of collaborative complex organizations.
Demonstrated capacity to be a strategic partner, creative leader, and team player.
Demonstrated journalistic writing abilities and professional publications.
Preferred:
Master's degree preferred
Demonstrated skills in project management.
Knowledge of public relations, journalism, and news media.
Ability to develop relationships and partnerships with a range of stakeholders including the UC office of the president, UCI strategic communications, office of institutional research, health advancement, UCI Health marketing in communications, community and government relations, and other administrative officers to promote consistent messaging among audiences and to ensure linkage to UCI Health Affairs' mission, culture, and overarching business strategy.
Extensive knowledge of communications, promotional, and marketing principles.
Exceptional writing, proofreading and editing skills.
Ability to translate concepts, ideas in large amounts of data into compelling, dynamic and effective communications pieces.
Ability to manage conflicting priorities with tight timelines.
Demonstrated organizational abilities that allows the incumbent to work on multiple projects completing the lines and establish goals and workload priorities.
Experience interviewing, coaching and analyzing senior leaders, and communication delivery.
