Description:The University of Notre Dame's Technology Ethics Center (ND TEC) seeks a founding director for the newly-announced Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab.
The Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab, founded in partnership with IBM, will serve as the primary vehicle through which the ND TEC engages with private industry, policymakers, and public interest groups to develop policy and inform industry best practices relating to technology ethics. ND TEC, the result of the University's substantial investment in technology ethics, develops and supports multi-disciplinary research on questions related to the impact of technology on humanity.
Building upon the academic expertise of ND TEC faculty and affiliated fellows, the Technology Ethics Lab's mission is to be a global leader in the area of technology ethics, including the ethics of new technologies such as artificial intelligence. It will engage leading technology ethics experts, policymakers, and government and industry leaders to work together on important technology ethics questions and develop practical applications for the best research on a range of topics. More specifically, the Technology Ethics Lab will, among other activities:
Develop ethical frameworks relating to enduring and emerging ethical challenges presented by current and future technology;
Identify best practices for institutionalizing within organizations ethical considerations relating to technology;
Develop policy proposals and thought leadership regarding technology ethics and engage with advocacy organizations and policymakers for adoption;
Facilitate scholarly dialogue on technology ethics issues and subjects;
Pursue and fund groundbreaking research on pressing technology ethics questions
Sponsor visiting fellows working on timely technology ethics topics; and
Provide opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and professional student engagement in the technology ethics area.
With IBM as the founding member, The Technology Ethics Lab will also convene an industry alliance that will bring together a diversity of perspectives and ground the Lab in industry- relevant challenges.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have significant experience working on ethical and policy questions relating to technology and developing practical outputs relating to those questions.
Candidates should
Have a terminal degree in their field and/or substantial equivalent experience;
Have experience working successfully with a range of constituencies from academia, industry, government, and the nonprofit sector;
Be capable of working closely with a collaborative governance committee;
Have the ability to develop a clear vision for the Technology Ethics Lab and its role in ND TEC;
Have excellent project management skills;
Have demonstrated leadership ability and the capacity to build a team; hire and supervise a team; and serve as an ambassador for the Technology Ethics Lab, ND TEC, and the University of Notre Dame; and
Have the ability to grow the resources of the Technology Ethics Lab through entrepreneurial collaborations that will broaden and deepen the Labs impact.
This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges.
