Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Seven (7) years of Environmental, Health and Safety experience. Five (5) years of leadership and supervisory experience. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in safety or a related field. Ten (10) years of experience managing professional, technical and administrative staff in the field of Environmental Health and Safety. Five (5) years of experience in Healthcare Safety program implementation, including Environment of Care Management Plans, Patient Safety Programs, Joint Commission Accreditations and Health Department Surveys. Strong written skills, including the development of policies, training and other programs. Demonstrated skills for leadership of teams, committees at all levels inside and outside the organization. Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) credentials. Experience at an academic teaching hospital. Experience in Healthcare Sustainability.
Primary Purpose:
The Director of Healthcare Safety serves as the Hospital Safety Officer and provides leadership support and direction for the department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), Healthcare Safety team and EH&S programs for Stony Brook University Hospital and facilities, by setting priorities and goals, budget, program objectives and assuring effective program implementation. The Director is the EH&S subject matter expert and ensures safety and compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) Environment of Care (EOC) standards and other Federal and State codes and regulations including Fire and Life Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Environmental and Hazardous Waste management, and is authorized to discontinue operations of any function or activity when he/she determines there is an imminent danger to life, health or property. The Director serves as Co-Chair of the Healthcare Sustainability Committee, provides guidance and directs key initiatives. The ideal candidate should be a highly motivated and big-picture thinker with the capacity to work independently and as a team player in a fast-paced and diverse professional environment that encompasses senior leadership, physicians, supply chain, facilities, support services, clinical laboratories, ambulatory healthcare, hospital, nursing, veteran's home, food service, contractors, medical residents, etc. The incumbent must have excellent interpersonal skills to interact and communicate with others in a positive way.
Duties:
- Administration : Provide leadership and direction for the EH&S Healthcare Safety group to ensure efficient and effective operations. Develop and implement goals and objectives that are aligned with the missions of the EH&S Department, Stony Brook University Hospital and the Long Island State Veterans Home. Assist with the development of departmental budgets and manage spending of assigned accounts. Execute human resource requirements, including performance evaluations and programs, recruiting, staffing and professional development.
- EH&S Programs : Initiate, review and update programs, policies, procedures and training for all Healthcare Safety programs, including Fire and Life Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Environmental and Hazardous Waste management to ensure compliance with OSHA and NYSDOL (PESH) and other applicable federal and state regulations. Implement facility and workplace inspections, exposure monitoring, hazard assessments, and accident/incident investigations to identify risks, unsafe conditions and practices, and provide recommendations for process improvements, engineering controls and personal protective equipment (PPE). Review injury/illness reports, DOSH 900 log and other information to assess program effectiveness. Ensure that databases and records are maintained, and that reports are generated as required. Coordinate implementation of programs between other functional groups of the department including Radiation Safety and Laser Safety.
- Hospital Committees : Serve on various hospital committees and work groups, including, but not limited to, Environment of Care Committee (Co-Chair), Healthcare Sustainability, Patient Safety Committee, Patient Safety First (PSF) Planning Committee, Administrative Policy and Procedure Committee, Workplace Violence Prevention Committee, Infection Control Committee, and Emergency Management Committee (Co-Chair). Provide regulatory guidance and support for the development and implementation of related programs, policies and initiatives, including but not limited to Sharp Injury Prevention, Safe Patient Handling and Occupational Injury and Illness Prevention (OIIP).
- Hospital Environment of Care : Review, update and implement The Joint Commission Environment of Care (EOC) Management plans, including the Safety Management, Life Safety Management, and the Hazardous Materials and Waste Management plans. Serves on the Hospital EOC Committee and provide recommendations for other EOC management plans (i.e. Medical Equipment, Security, and Utilities). Prepare and present the EOC Annual Report to the Governing Body.
- Healthcare Sustainability : Serves as co-Chair of the Healthcare Sustainability Committee. Brainstorm ideas and guide focus teams working on key initiatives. Provide updates and highlights for the Sustainability webpage and press releases. Assists with the development of an annual strategic plan. Oversees the Practice Greenhealth Award application process and submission. Works with hospital leadership to promote and continue focus on healthcare sustainability programming and implementation.
- Emergency Response : Respond to emergencies, during and after normal business hours, and provide assistance as needed. Serve on the Hospital Emergency Management Committee and assume roles of Safety Officer and/or Incident Commander, as required.
- EH&S Department : As a Sr. Staff member, assist the EH&S AVP in developing and implementing administrative, budget, human resource, programmatic and team-building initiatives that establish and support the overall departmental goals and objectives.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
