Overview
The pre-apprentice internship is a 4 week program required before being considered for PPPL's Apprenticeship Program. The successful candidate will be introduced to working as a Welding apprenticeships before joining PPPL’s Apprenticeship Program. The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world. Welders play a crucial role in this grand challenge of the 21st century working in close collaboration with world class physicists and attacking difficult scientific and technical problems. Responsibilities
- Participates in all aspects of PPPL Materials jointing, forming, testing and treatment operations
- Assist engineering personnel in development and application of new or improved welding and brazing techniques, procedures, and practices
- Assists engineering personnel in testing and validation of welded designs, metals, and alloys
- Operate furnaces, vacuum systems, and test stands for material heat treatment and testing.
- Assist in evaluating data and conducting experiments to develop application of new equipment or improved techniques, procedures, or practices
- Inspect welded joints and conducts tests to ensure welds meet design standards, code requirements, and project-specific requirements
- Perform residual gas analysis of samples
- Perform vacuum leak test and provide leak rate results
- Perform maintenance and operation of heat treatment equipment, as well as materials testing equipment
Qualifications
Education and Experience: - High School Diploma and Equivalent. Technical or Trade School background preferred
- You must be at least 18 years old by July 12th, 2021.
- You must be eligible for work in the United States.
